SANTO DOMINGO. - The steel company Gerdau Metaldom and Nueva Vida para los Residuos (NUVI) signed a collaboration agreement through which they undertake to place NUVI Points at the company's facilities, with the aim of reducing and making the most of the amount of post-consumer waste generated in the daily activities of the organization.

These NUVI points will allow the collection of PET plastic bottles, consumed by Gerdau Metaldom employees and visitors, to later be incorporated into the circular economy process promoted by NUVI and whose ultimate purpose is to reduce the importation of raw materials, reduce the negative impact of plastic in the environment and accompany the organization in strengthening its culture of sustainability.

"For years at Gerdau Metaldom we have adopted policies that lean towards a vision of responsible development, where we seek the well-being of our employees, the community and the environment in an integral manner. And it is only by completing this sustainable virtuous circle that we will be able to guarantee the transcendence of our company for generations, adding collective value for the Dominican Republic," said Paul Hasbún, secretary of the Gerdau Metaldom Board of Directors.

Jefferson Marko, executive president of Gerdau Metaldom, thanked and congratulated Circe Almánzar and NUVI for the initiative, while he promised to continue working in favor of the environment and sustainability.

The collaboration agreement was signed by Hasbún and Almánzar, who ratified their intention to work together to promote the culture of recycling and the optimization of the circular economy.

Circe Almánzar thanked Gerdau Metaldom for joining the initiative and positively assessed the company's approach to the circular economy, adding new materials to be recycled, in addition to those that the company already recycled due to the nature of its functions.

"The Gerdau Metaldom company is one of the symbols of the circular economy in our country. The commitment of the Dominican industrial sector seeks to achieve a change in the way of doing business with awareness, social responsibility, but above all environmental responsibility," said Circe Almánzar, President of NUVI.

Also present were Susy Aquino Gautreau, executive director of NUVI; Marcos Mattiello, director of operations of Gerdau Metaldom; Ingrid Lapaix, Regional Director of People Management and Ileana Rojas, Regional Manager of Environment.

The agreement establishes the interest and willingness to collaborate in favor of creating processes that direct materials back to the economy, away from landfills, and organize entities through the process of creating and closing circles with sustainable practices and profitable.

NUVI is a non-profit initiative of the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) whose mission and purpose is to lead the circular economy objectives and support integrated waste management systems for its recovery in the Dominican Republic.

Gerdau Metaldom is the main company for manufacturing finished steel products in the Dominican Republic, with an installed capacity of more than one million tons per year.
